Valley Of Ferns
I still haven't figured out how to photograph trees. This scene just doesn't have the umf that was actually there.

Maidenhair Ferns
Earlier in the year (when ferns were just starting to rise from the leaf litter) I realized just how many species there were out there. I've seen Maidenhair Ferns before but now I knew I was looking for them.

Oak Fern Unrolling
If you look carefully at the head in this fern and compare it with Braken Fern unrolling you can see there is quite a bit of difference.

Bracken Head Other Way
So many material specializations. Such a clever unwrap but down't choke growth design. Cool.

Bracken Head
I like the fractal nature of this design.

The ferns are well over 12 feet tall - I've never seen them before.

Deer Ferns
I believe this a Deer Fern or Blechnum Spicant. The leaves on the ground are sterile and the leaves that grow from the center are fertile.

Tree With Green
This fallen tree is covered with the new plants trying to soak up the sun.
You can see deer ferns, sword ferns, bracken ferns, dogwood, and more.

Moss on Rocks
This little plant caught my attention - I didn't even realize it was a fern.
The rest of the moss is quite nice.

I love how everything is green - covered in moss.

Toad Side View
My good friend Bufo boreas. I was walking in the forest when I saw him and I called Steve over to catch him. Turns out this toad isn't scared of people - it is toxic to eat so he put up with being posed on a near by patch of moss.
Species: Bufo boreas (Western Toad)

Deer Ferns
The only reason this got shot was because the light was pretty cool.

Walking In Giant Ferns
The Hemlock is the large tree with the wide roots. That's a bit strange for our trees - I believe this tree started on a nurse log which has since rotted away. The sword fern is ground cover here.
