Pod Swimming By
We were starting to pull away when this pod popped up. That is likely a young whale between the two females and you can see the larger male dorsal fin with a wave in it.
Species: Orcinus orca (killer whale, orca)

Large Male Leaving
This is a the same male that was photographed in the next four shots.

Female and Male Orca

The male in front has a much larger dorsal fin than the female.

Pod of Female Orcas

This is a small group out of the large pod. These smaller pods were loosely connected
into the large pod traveling south.

Herd Of Elk On Golf Course
Elk males should write books - one guy - 20 something women and they don't even mind? Blows my mind.

Bull Chewing
I had a bag full of 40 speed film Velvia slide film and a few rolls of high speed black and white. It was late enough in the day that high speed was pretty much the only choice.

We are right off the parking lot to the Cave and Basin Interpretive Center (which we didn't in the end visit).

White Tailed Ptarmigan From Side
I believe this is part way though the molt from winter (white) to summer (like the rock).

Live Abalone

Mike caught a live one!  The holes on the top allow water to flow over the gills.  I was
surprised by the number of stalks on the body.  My guide book says this animal can
live up to 50 years - we returned it to the ocean shortly after I took this picture.

Seals on Belle Islands

Pretty much snack sized Killer Whale snacks.  They were on the same chain of
Islands as the Sea Lions, but they were in a separate area.

Black Katy Chiton
I love how Sea Sacs (Halosaccion glandiforme) has chosen to colonize the plates on this Chiton.
Species: Katharina tunicata (Black Katy Chiton), Halosaccion glandiforme (Sea Sacs)

Mussels And Barnacles
Probably California Mussels (Mytilus californiensis), growing in with Leaf Barnacle (Pollicipes polymerus). These two spieces usually have large homogenous colonies - so it looks like the Mussels are overgrowing the Barnacle colony.
Species: Mytilus californianus (California mussel), Pollicipes polymerus (Goose Barnacle or Goose Neck Barnacle)
