Species: Egretta garzetta (Little Egret)

Two Birds Looking Aside
This colony is cool because the birds are stand on top of bamboo trees, not on a remote rock like many Canadian colonies.

The lack of plumes (long feathers) and the season says this is the non-breeding plumage. The dark feet say juvenile to me.

Egret Fishing
The black bill and legs and yellow feet make this a Little Egret in my book. This dull yellow feet make this look like a juvenile to me.

Two Chicks In Tree
You can see the bright red in the feathers - there is still blood flow in there as the feathers are growing.

Black Eared Kite Turning
I really wasn't expecting to take photos of this bird - that is why the exposure is so off. I was walking in the area (actually taking photos of butterflies) and the bird flew - much further away than a bird in Vancouver does. I shot with what was set. Shooting a dark bird against an overcast sky is always a poor idea.
Species: Milvus migrans lineatus (black-eared kite)

Black Eared Kite
There were lots of large predators flying around the shores in Sai Kung. I believe I saw an Osprey at a long distance. The Black-eared Kites were by far the most common - later in the day I saw at least 10 from our position on the boat.

Two Vultures Circling
Two Vultures Circling. The internet has changed things. Back in the day, after a day of taking photos, I would hit the books and look up each bird I saw using the local guide books. Now I can use google images to find unique features and then work backwards to be sure I have the correct species.
Species: Sarcogyps calvus (Red-headed Vulture, Asian King Vulture)

Soaring
Yes, the wings are in focus, not the eyes. My bad.
Species: Diomedea sanfordi (Northern Royal Albatross)

Sun Through Feet
I like the sun lighting through the skin on the feet and the tail feathers. The bands on the leg are quite clearly visible.

Albatross Descending
I like the big bands on it's foot - those are there to recognize an individual without having to capture him/her.

Red-Wattled Lapwing Flying By
We really pissed this bird off by being here - it flew circles around us for the whole time.

Long Billed Dowicher On Log
I was quite surprised to the see these shore birds dwarfed by the peacefull mallards. Generally Mallards are enough of a pain that other birds don't hang out.

Western Sandpipers Flying Away
I like how they are all sticking out there legs from the take off. These little birds will migrate from Northern Canada to South America.

Pied Billed Grebe With Chick
This bird was very far away and wasn't getting any closer.

House Finch Off Deck
I usually call these "Little Brown Jobby" and just pass because I don't have long enough lenses to capture small birds. This bird was close enough that I could get a decent image.
