Purple Ring Top Snail on Giant Kelp

Ruth brought us a number of treats from the ocean. This piece of kelp had a few
snails on it.

Black Turban (Black Tegula)

I'm having a tough time calling this one. It has some gunk on it but it doesn't have the worn
top a Black Turban is suposed to have. If it is a Black Turban, they are reported to live 80 to 100 years (or until
someone steps on it). It's on a piece of Giant Kelp (Giant Perennial Kelp) that it
was feeding on.

Motion Blur Snail
I don't have a good snail guide book (I have never found one), but Robert Forsyth seems to be working on a snail guide book for BC. He was kind enough to offer his opinion on this snail photo:
Hi John,

I've taken a look at your photo. It is a haplotrematid (family
Haplotrematidae), and is a half-grown individual. Not being able to see more
clearly some fine details of shell micro-sculpture, I cannot be entirely
certain of its Identification, but I'd say (about 85% certain) that it is
Haplotrema vancouverense -- the Robust Lancetooth snail, a common (and one of
the larger) species of land snail along the BC coast.

Hope that this helps.

Regards,

Robert
Thanks Robert!
