One of the great parts of Japan was the details. While the stones are the central
attraction, the environment is what makes the temple so cool.

When you enter temple areas you are supposed to clean your mouth and hands.
Westerners are excused (it might be just a Buddhist thing), but these fountains are found at many of the larger
sites.

I believe this particular pagoda is in Ninna-ji.

The combination of bell, the traditional roof, and the setting makes this shot very Japanese.
(I guess shot on Japanese film with a Japanese camera doesn't hurt either).

This temple is setup to be beautiful.  I like the little boat house, but the lake doesn't
really go anywhere.

of themselves and there parties in front of the temple.

This Temple is on the Philosophers Walk - Rats don't get a very
good rap in the western world, but they seem to be respected in Japan.

I was quite surprised this photo turned out as well as it did -
the lighting was through the large front doors and other small windows
around the building.

The smells coming from these burners! Most of the people there were
students - I don't know why they were burning incense.

This is apparently the largest wooden structure in the world. It's definitely
impressive.

I like this guy.

This is one of the large statues in the main temple.

The details on the temples are unique and interesting.  I think the temples
are something you could visit again and again.

I can't even begin to imagine how much work it must be to build these
temples with the details that are in them.

Those Australian Tourists on the left were in the in Hostel in Tokyo.  The temple
count is high.

This was the morning of the first day - every temple was a new and
amazing thing, and for the most part empty. Of course it was 6am and
we were a little jet lagged.
