Mungo Martin's Totem
The totem on the right is written up in Hillary Stewart's book - The pole was carved by Henry Hunt and Tony Hunt in 1970 as a memorial for Mungo Martin. Mungo Martin is one of the hero's in the Kwakiutal society - he was a prolific totem carver and one of the important links that brough the traditional artistic skills and knowledge out of the banned pot latch era. This totem pole was the first totem raised in Alert bay in 40 years.
The top figure is Kolus (the crest of Mungo's father from Gilford Island) followed by Cedar Man with a talking stick. The second from bottom figure is Raven caved in memory of David Martin. The bottom figure is Dzunukwa, the crest of Mungo's wife Abaya'a. The pole on the left (Thunderbird, Bear holding a whale's tail, Raven, Whale, Dzunukwa) was carved by Charlie James as a memorial for Amos Dawson's uncle. Missing Eagle Arm Totem
This is an older totem, but it's painted. The figures are Thunderbird, Killer Whale, Man holding a copper, Dzunukwa. Apparently the carver and the date of carving is unknown. I've since taken a closer photo. John Harvey Photo > Mid Coast of BC on the Curve of Time > Port McNiell to Hanson Island via Alert Bay > Missing Eagle Arm Totem
