Offerings on Top of Mauna Kea

Given the powerful gusts up here, I can understand why there are so many rocks.

Alter on Top Of Mauna Kea

From what I understand, offering are put on top and they fall through.
Periodically, a guardian comes up and buries the offerings in the base.

Cinder Cones On Mauna Kea

From what I understand, these cones are pushed up during eruptions, but lava may not flow out of them.

Entering the Moonscape

As we passed about 11,000 feet plant life has thinned out to nothing.  Apparently there
are insects up here that prey on insects that get blown up, but otherwise, it's dead.

Radio Telescope in a Sea of Clouds

The Radio telescopes were scattered all around the peak.  We are standing on the summit.

Jer Freezing

Jer is showing off just how cold it is! We went up in shorts and without jackets -
not appropriate for the weather at the end of summer on top of a mountain.

Cliffs in Fog

These are the cliffs overlooking Samson Narrows.  That jut of land
at the end is Maxwell Point.

On A Rock
The view is dramatic from up here even with the rain.

Mount Rainier From Tolmie Station
Even though we were standing on a mountain top (or very close to it - the actual peak (a few feet higher is on the ridge on the extreme left of the frame), Rainier is still thousands of feet above us. That is Eunice lake below and you can just see Mowich lake in the valley beyond.

Mark And Mike At Summit
I was quite happy with the silhouette but I have to admit it was purely accidental. Looking down on clouds is always cool.

Moss Campion And Top Of Gondolas
The lighting doesn't really call it out, but that the lift station down their on the next ridge, and you can see green lake in the bottom on the valley.
Species: Silene acaulis (Moss Campion)
