Four Spotted Skimmer On Reed
For comparison, this is a 105mm lens taking photos of a dragonfly. You don't hit the near focus limit, but you do scare off more insects.
Species: Libellula quadrimaculata (Four-spotted Skimmer)

Four Spotted Skimmer
I had my 400mm in the car so I was curious how well it would work for dragonflies. Not bad - it could use an extension tube to make it closer, but it did work well.

Russet Percher
Another species we saw at both the nature reserve and the the butterfly park. Most of the dragonflies you see in BC have entirely transparent wings, some with spots on them. This species is the opposite - opaque wings with transparent spots.

This photo is a composite of two images for depth of field.

Species: Neurothemis fulvia (Fulvous Forest Skimmer, Russet Percher)

Dragonfly On Trail
I have a less photogenic side view where you can see some of the white face.
Species: Leucorrhinia intacta (Dot-tailed whiteface)

Blue Dragonfly Red Blackberry
For some reason I find identifying dragonflies really challenging. I don't know which landmarks are important and which features are common to all species. Once you learn a few, you get better at it.

Cardinal Meadowhawk
I recently learned to look for the white spots on the abdomen.
Species: Sympetrum illotum (Cardinal Meadowhawk)

Four Spotted Skimmer On Diagonal
1/25th of a second - I'm really surprised it is sharp.

Paddle Tailed Darner In Flight
I didn't know at the time - you use the stripes on the body to tell the different kinds of Darners apart.

Paddle Tailed Darner Face
This particular insect liked to hover at the same spot for a long period of time so it was easy for me to take photos of it.
