April 2026

Go to Slide Show Smaller Images And some clever quip...

We went to Victoria for the Easter Long weekend.  We spend most of the weekend working on Nara's Science Fair project - sanding fiberglass and putting more epoxy on.  I did get some time to go to do some non-sailboat work.

Walk Around Uplands Park

I have visited Uplands Park lots of times in spring -April 2015 (April 5th, lots of Fawn Lily), April 2019 (April 21st, lots of early Camas), April 2023 (April 10th) because of early meadow flowers.  A recent trip (May 2025 - May 19th) had the Camas at full bloom.  This has been a cold spring so I was curious to see what was out.

The short answer was not much.  Yes, I found a few Camas blooming (a space that must get a lot of sun), but most the Camas didn't even have buds.  Even the Fawn Lilys were early - some flowers but still a lot of flowers yet to bloom.  The fields of Camas were still green and the Camas looked like it was having a hard time.

There was a lot of Shooting Star in various fields.  There are two species of Shooting stars in this part of the world and the best way to tell them apart is the leaf shape.  Sadly, I rarely think to take photos of the leaves.

Easter Egg Hunt

My Mom has a secret skill at hiding easter eggs.  The kids still wanted to do a hunt so my Mom put chocolates in 44 eggs and distributed them in the garden at the front and back of the house.  The kids are quite competitive and we don't use the "only pick up one of two" rule we used when the kids were younger.  The kids did end without roughly the same number of eggs.

Claira Caught Rock Lizard
My parents back yard has large exposed rock which makes great Europen Wall Lizard habitat.  These arrived in their neighborhood and I doubt they will ever leave.  Claira is pretty good at picking them up off the rocks and is able to grab 3 or more before they are all hiding deep in the rocks.

OakHaven Park

The Garry Oak ecosystem is rare and hard to find.  Last year I did some research on other parks and Oak Haven Park in Central Saanich showed up high on the list.  We visited last year August for the fall colors. Given that Uplands park was a little "between seasons", I wanted to see the same habitat that was higher up and potentially warmer.
