Rock Garden
This is the Zen Garden in Ryoan-ji. From the viewing platform you attempt to see all 15 stones, but only 14 (or fewer) are visible from any position. This fifteenth century garden has all sorts of tricks. The far wall isn't even close to level and gives you a sense of depth from the forced perspective. The trees behind the back wall all have seasonal version (Cherry blossums, or falls colors, evergreen or deciduous.). The garden runs roughly east to west and the viewing platform is on the north side so the shadows change over the course of the day. Each Torii is sponsored. The Sponsors is written on one side of the Torri so the Torii are clean going in and the credits run on the way out. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Fourth Trip to Japan > Kyoto > Sponsors Visible

After the torches were set up, a parade came by with hand held torches and walked up to the city square. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Second Trip to Japan > Festivals in Kyoto > Parade Walking Past Torches

Giant Crab
This is a pretty young area to hang out - the streets are lined with fast food shops and there are several covered shopping streets intersecting here. The restaurant with the giant crab is called Kani Doraku Dotonburi Honten . We wound up eating okonomiyaki close to here.
