Pear Shaped Puffball
There is a part of the park where these mushrooms are usually abundant and this year was no exception. There were young to old mushrooms which makes identification easier. Species: Morganella pyriformis (pear-shaped puffball)

Western Toad In Moss
My good friend Bufo boreas. I was walking in the forest when I saw him and I called Steve over to catch him. Turns out this toad isn't scared of people - it is toxic to eat so he put up with being posed on a near by patch of moss. Species: Bufo boreas (Western Toad)

Touching Moss
I'm a big fan of the small ferns that live in the cracks. The moss lives on wet spots (or sometimes under them) and the kids thought they were really soft cushions. Tags: moss

Gate Breaking Down
Torri rarely fall to this level of disrepair. I really like the moss growing on top of the posts. The stones on top of the cross bar is a common theme in Japan - often you get a reward (luck, a child etc) if you can throw a rock and have it land on the cross bar. Often there are additional requirements - off hand, stand behind the line, etc. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Fourth Trip to Japan > Mt Koya > Gate Breaking Down

Admirable Bolete
This is quite small (see the moss for scale). I like how the green light reflected from the moss under lights the mushroom. Species: Boletus mirabilis (Admirable Bolete)

Deer Fern Growing In Red Moss
This was such an amazing contrast that I had to stop and take a picture. There were a number of times hiking that I wished I brought my tripod. Most of the time I was glad I didn't bring the weight. Moss is difficult to identify unless you have really really good pictures. Species: Blechnum spicant (Deer Fern)

Mossy Beard
I've tried to ID this moss, but moss is hard unless you take a number of good photos to really get detail on the plant - even then you are often guessing. Tags: moss
