Japanese Rock Garden
I was here 17 years ago if you want a comparison. The lantern is in the same place, now with more moss. That "island" in the foreground is new and the rocks have moved a lot. You can see when some of those bushes were just planted. John Harvey Photo > Blogs for 2023 to 2005 > October 2022 > Japanese Rock Garden

Zen Rock Garden
So it doesn't change very quickly - it sure is cool to look at. We are at Ryoanji Temple, trying to see John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Trip to Japan > North West Kyoto > Zen Rock Garden

Model of Garden
This is a model of the Rock Garden. The real garden is pretty hard to get far back from so this John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Trip to Japan > North West Kyoto > Model of Garden

Japanese Garden
I believe this is a recent addition. For comparison, a Japanese version a few hundred years old. I came back 17 years later and took a photo from a similar spot. The rocks have moved a lot and some of the trees are much larger now. John Harvey Photo > Blogs for 2023 to 2005 > March, 2005 > Japanese Garden

Rock Garden
This is the Zen Garden in Ryoan-ji. From the viewing platform you attempt to see all 15 stones, but only 14 (or fewer) are visible from any position. This fifteenth century garden has all sorts of tricks. The far wall isn't even close to level and gives you a sense of depth from the forced perspective. The trees behind the back wall all have seasonal version (Cherry blossums, or falls colors, evergreen or deciduous.). The garden runs roughly east to west and the viewing platform is on the north side so the shadows change over the course of the day. Stones In Temple
There are different ways to see this - perhaps these are islands in the ocean - peaks in the clouds - see it how ever you want. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > A Second Trip to Japan > Kyoto Temples > Stones In Temple
