Beach Treasures At Hoi Ha Wan
Hoi Ha Wan is a park so you can't take things home. We took a photo of the prizes so that we could remember what the kids found at the beach. John Harvey Photo > Trips out of the Country > Hong Kong 11 > Beach Treasures At Hoi Ha Wan

Helen With AShell
I believe this is a Tiger cowrie. I found it on the bottom wedged between two rocks. It was wedged in so well I had to use both hands to pull it out. Once we got to the surface we figured out it was still live (something in the shell) so it went back in the ocean. Another couple pulled up another example and it was much heavier for the same size - I think our example was slowly starving. Motion Blur Snail
I don't have a good snail guide book (I have never found one), but Robert Forsyth seems to be working on a snail guide book for BC. He was kind enough to offer his opinion on this snail photo: Hi John, I've taken a look at your photo. It is a haplotrematid (family Haplotrematidae), and is a half-grown individual. Not being able to see more clearly some fine details of shell micro-sculpture, I cannot be entirely certain of its Identification, but I'd say (about 85% certain) that it is Haplotrema vancouverense -- the Robust Lancetooth snail, a common (and one of the larger) species of land snail along the BC coast. Hope that this helps. Regards, Robert Species: Haplotrema vancouverense (Robust Lancetooth)

Abalone Shell On Sphagnum
The very rare bog Abalone! I don't know how this shell got her - most likely it was either carried by a human (mmm, shiny), or a bird like a crow or raven (mmm, shiny). We found other bits of shellfish around, so I believe the bird story. Tags: shell
