Glaucous Winged Gull Flipping Red Rock Crab
The gull dispatched the crab pretty promptly. He flipped the crab onto it's back and then ripped off the legs. One he had leg holes, he ripped open the shell and ate the body of the crab.
Species: Cancer productus (red rock crab), Larus glaucescens (glaucous-winged gull)

Northern Kelp Crab In Hand
This little guy moved around pretty fast, but liked the top of Mike's backpack. We found others when paddling - they were generally hanging on kelp. Pugettia producta.

Crow In Tree
This was a surprise for me - Around Vancouver we generally get Northwestern Crows, but this is an American crow (slightly larger). The way I can tell them apart is by the hair on their nose.

Fluffy Squirrel Stole Dorito
As I understand it, this squirrel shouldn't be here - this is outside of their range. That said, I can't believe it's another species.

Cascade Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel
New species for me! These were unfortunately tame - the peanut shells lining the parking lot were a pretty good explanation - the other family in the parking lot feeding them out of their hands was a case in point.

Western Toad In Moss
My good friend Bufo boreas. I was walking in the forest when I saw him and I called Steve over to catch him. Turns out this toad isn't scared of people - it is toxic to eat so he put up with being posed on a near by patch of moss.

Humpback Whale Blow

The shutter speed was a bit too slow here. The timing is good though.

The male Dorsel Fins are impressive. They stand out in a group and when the they get close
they are easy to spot.
