And some clever quip...
Ski Day 2 at Grouse
The kids like skiing. We usually book
4 days of lessons at Grouse over the holidays because it leaves
you done the holidays with a sense that you accomplished
something. This year I finally bought new skis and boots and
joined the kids on the ski hill! Skiing at Grouse over the
holidays is a bit tricky. The parking lot fills around 8:15
and the line up for the gondola can be easily 2 hours (up and
down) at the wrong times. Thankfully, kids lessons drop off
at 7:45 (parking still available) and they take the first gondola
up. Us parents get to the top about an hour later.
On the plus side, a lot of people going up grouse aren't going to
ski so the runs are surprisingly open. The lift lineups we
always under 10 minutes and on the blue chair were often almost
non-existent. I was really surprised. I pick the
kids up at 11am after their lessons and we managed to squeeze in 3
more runs before the kids got too tired to keep going.
Nara and Claira are at different levels so finding something good
for both is a bit of a trick. We spent most of our time on
"The Cut" because they were familar with the run and they are
working on basics like solid turns and stops.
There was
a cloud layer about half way down the run so as we got further down
we went into light fog. The visibility was fine so no reasons
to head higher up the mountain. When the behaviour gets bad,
we head to the top and take the gondola down - good day!
Skating at Kerisdale Arena
Sometimes it surprises me how durable kids
are. They spent two mornings skiing and in the afternoon we
take them skating! Our neighbors rented the Kerisdale Arena
for a family function and kindly invited us to join them!
Ski Day 3 at Grouse
It had been about a decade since I was last on
downhill skis so I didn't go into hard runs on my first
day. Second day, I focused on good form on the blue
runs. I bumped into Nara's class coming down the cat track
from the peak so I bounced down the cut to see if I could also
spot Claira. The kids seemed to be enjoying classes.
I picked the kids up again after their lesson and we poked around
the cut some more.
Nara
wanted to try something harder so we tried "Paper Trail", next to
the cut. The run isn't as well groomed, but we had the run to
ourselves. Nara wound up loosing a ski so we spent a bunch of
time recovering it.
The kids were tired so we ended the day (returned the rentals) and
headed to the bottom of the mountain to go to Dennys. Great
day!
