January 2025
And some clever quip...
Walk to Work In the Fog
I walk to work over the Granville Street Bridge. Vancouver
gets fog maybe 10 days a year and this particular morning I
brought my camera. The nice part about the fog is that it
gives a really good sense of depth in photos.

Fog often doesn't last very long so by the time I got downtown the
fog had mostly lifted.
George C Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Our
weekends are pretty busy but sometimes we have a free morning.
It was cold, but mostly clear so I decided to have a morning walking
at the bird Sanctuary.
January has some migratory birds. The noisiest of them are the
American Widgeons. These are smaller than Mallards but they
make up for it in numbers - dozens to hundreds sometimes.
These birds spend their summers much farther north but in the winter
they are common around Vancouver. There are actually two
species here - American Widgeon and Eurasian Widgeon, but you have
to be patient to find the Eurasian individuals in the flocks.

I already have about a million photos of Sandhill Cranes, but the
cranes at the Santuary are such characters that it's hard to not
take out your camera when they come running up to you. They
were fortunate enough to have several chicks survive this year so
it's nice to see the golden colored juveniles learning from their
parents.
Sunset Photo Walk in Chinatown
Kids these days have phones and iPads so schools assign "take
photos" kind of art projects. Nara uses one of my old
cameras as her iPad camera takes not very good
pictures. She had a photo project for school so we
decided to go to Chinatown for a walk around sunset. The
weather didn't look great but just after we parked it started
raining.

Rain at sunset doesn't seam like a
great time to take photos but if you are okay with your camera
getting a bit wet, the lighting is often fantastic! We briefly
saw a rainbow and the sky gave off an eerie orange glow.
Sadly, this lighting doesn't last long and very quickly we were into
the low light that is sunset.

We walked down Pender Street toward downtown looking for
intesting things in the falling light. We walked to just past
Abbot street before we turned around and headed back to where we
parked.
By this point it was getting quite dark which requires a wide open
lens and a lot of stillness to get a good photo.
Nara got some good photos for her school project and we still
had a lot of the evening to go.
