Great Blue Heron Eating Starry Flounder
Saturday, January 14th, 2017 at 21:35:50

I'm going with Starry Flounder because of the prominent stripes on the sides of it's body. There were several Great Blue Herons in the water and they were easily finding prey.
Species: Platichthys stellatus (starry flounder), Ardea herodias (Great Blue Heron)

Rhinoceros Auklet Swimming Together
Sunday, October 30th, 2016 at 00:19:01

We weren't very close to these birds as the boat motored by - I couldn't tell for sure what they were until I saw them on the computer.

Pigeon Guillemot In Flight
Sunday, October 30th, 2016 at 00:18:59

I really like the penguin dress code. There were a number flying around Race Rocks, some standing on shore.

Black Eared Kite Turning
Monday, October 10th, 2016 at 13:45:40

I really wasn't expecting to take photos of this bird - that is why the exposure is so off. I was walking in the area (actually taking photos of butterflies) and the bird flew - much further away than a bird in Vancouver does. I shot with what was set. Shooting a dark bird against an overcast sky is always a poor idea.
Species: Milvus migrans lineatus (black-eared kite)

Black Eared Kite
Monday, October 10th, 2016 at 13:44:00

There were lots of large predators flying around the shores in Sai Kung. I believe I saw an Osprey at a long distance. The Black-eared Kites were by far the most common - later in the day I saw at least 10 from our position on the boat.

Boat Launch At Moon Rise

This is three images seamed together in Hugin. I was hoping it was dark and cloudless so I could take a photo of the milky way, but it was neither.

Rufous Hummingbird
Saturday, June 11th, 2016 at 15:01:40

This tree was maybe 5 feet high but it was out of the wind so bird could rest and see anything coming. He was skittish - even 20 feet away away he would alight.

Crowds At Yehliu Geopark
Thursday, June 9th, 2016 at 21:30:44

The tall rock in the centre is "the most famous" so everyone wants a selfie with the rock. The man in the reflective jacket has a whistle to keep people behaving well - he will whistle if you go out of bounds of step on a rock formation you aren't supposed to. There were several "whistle guys" around and I was quite glad they were there or else this place would be rubble.

Pool Bar
Thursday, June 9th, 2016 at 21:15:43

This is two images seemed together - I did a really poor job taking these photos - the camera wasn't actually that close in orientation or position so please excuse the rough treatment. The sun set pretty close to 6pm each night, but the bar stayed open as long as there were customers - generally until 8 or 9pm. You could always get drinks at the restaurant.
