Garter Snake Mouth Open
The tongue flicking is that the snake can grab particles and move them to sense organs in the mouth. Sometimes it just opens it's mouth to achieve the same effect. This snake was more than a meter away and completely harmless to me, but it still seems threatening.
Species: Thamnophis elegans terrestris (Coast Garter Snake)

Four Spotted Skimmer
shot f 14 trying to get enough depth of field to get from one wing to the other. Shot 1/60th of a second at 400asa. Still missed it - the focus point was probably the stem so I lost the wing closer and the bug is blurry. Good try, but fail.
Species: Libellula quadrimaculata (Four-spotted Skimmer)

Four Spotted Skimmer On Diagonal
1/25th of a second - I'm really surprised it is sharp.

Eurasian Collared Dove On Rail
There are a lot of pigeons in Vancouver - mostly rock doves. This species (which is also an introduced species) I haven't seen in the city. The bird was actually quite skittish - he would readily fly up into the trees when people came by.
Species: Streptopelia decaocto (Eurasian Collared Dove)

Douglas Squirrel Mother
Sometimes you find more than you were expecting when you take a photo. This Squirrel is a mother and has three nipples showing on this side (three more on the other I would assume). I assume by September all her babies are grown up, but it's possible she is fed well enough to have two litters a year.
Species: Tamiasciurus douglasii (Douglas's squirrel)

Red Brested Nuthatch Eating Peanuts
There is a lot of feeders at the Richmond Nature Park. If you are lucky to go when there is no one else there, you see more species. If there are lots of kids running around, you only see squirrels and chickadees.
Species: Sitta canadensis (Red-breasted Nuthatch)

Rufous Hummingbird
The throat patch on these really are something else.
Species: Selasphorus rufus (rufous hummingbird)

Dark Eyed Junko Singing
There is a bird feeder with 20 feet of this bird. I was impressed by how long it's nails are.
Species: Junco hyemalis (Dark-eyed Junco)

Male Hairy Woodpecker With Fall Colours
The tree behind this dead tree had some nice fall colours. The dead tree is nicely monochrome so it all works well. This tree is about 6 feet from the feeding station.
Species: Picoides villosus (Hairy Woodpecker)

Green Frog Half Submerged
I think if this was a bullfrog that ridge wouldn't continue down the back, it would wrap around the Tympanum and then end.
Species: Lithobates clamitans (Green Frog)

Tadpole Lurking In The Shallows
I think you can see legs about half way down the body. It's hard for me to tell if this is a green frog or bull frog tadpole - I suspect it's a green frog because there are many green frogs in this pond in the summer, and the body to tail ratio is longer (likely Green Frog) and it doesn't have black spots (Bullfrogs have black spots).
Species: Lithobates clamitans (Green Frog)

Four Spotted Skimmer
I had my 400mm in the car so I was curious how well it would work for dragonflies. Not bad - it could use an extension tube to make it closer, but it did work well.
Species: Libellula quadrimaculata (Four-spotted Skimmer)

Four Spotted Skimmer On Reed
For comparison, this is a 105mm lens taking photos of a dragonfly. You don't hit the near focus limit, but you do scare off more insects.

Claira Looking At An Inch Worm
I spent quite a bit of time looking up this thing - I think it's a Winter Moth - Operophtera brumata. Introduced species, likes to eat leafy trees. I believe the chickadee's like to feed these to the babies.
