Green Winged Teal
I'm trying to show that the teal is quite a bit smaller than the Mallard.

It's been a long dry summer - the trees don't have much fruit.

Nara Touching Tiny Green Urchin
I was really impressed they found such a small urchin. Of course, they must start small but when you normally only see adult ones.

Claira With Ochre Star
A few years ago, we had a huge outbreak of a sea star wasting disease. I'm surprised there are large examples of stars now.
Species: Pisaster ochraceus (Ochre Star)

Claira Touching Blood Star
These stars are great - bright colour and really recognizable arm length to radius.
Species: Henricia leviuscula (Blood Star)

Two Wet Mallard Chicks
I really wonder about Mallard Chicks at Stanley Park. They immediately walk up to people hoping for hand outs - they seem to have no fear. I wonder if they also walk up to predators.
Species: Anas platyrhynchos (Mallard)

Marsh Cinquefoil
The big leaves belong to a different plant - I've identified the species of the flowers as Marsh Cinquefoil. It has rather narrow leaves.
Species: Comarum palustre (marsh cinquefoil)

Beaver Swimming Left
I've wanted to see a Beaver at Beaver lake for a long time - the trick I think is going at the right time of the day - near night.
Species: Castor canadensis (American Beaver)

Ring Necked Duck
The classic, I thought it was one species, get home and check the guide books and find out I was totally wrong. Live and learn.

Also, not great composition - try getting lower to the water and try to get the eye focused.

Species: Aythya collaris (Ring-necked Duck)

Grey Squirrel
This Squirrel had no problem standing on your shoe asking for a hand out, but he didn't hang out for long if you weren't giving.
Species: Sciurus carolinensis (eastern gray squirrel)

John Harvey Photo > January 2009 > Grey Squirrel

Great Blue Heron Face
I love the little feathers on the head.

You can see the strong black and white stripe on the head and orange in the top of the bill.

Species: Ardea herodias (Great Blue Heron)

John Harvey Photo > January 2009 > Great Blue Heron Face

Black Grey Squirrel
These Squirrels aren't endemic to this coast but they seem to out compete the local animals. The black versions are more common than the grey ones.
Species: Sciurus carolinensis (eastern gray squirrel)

Ochre Star In The City
Wide angle shallow depth of field has a distinct look to it. Given the contrast here, I'm really impressed with the image.

GBH With Towers Behind
I get a kick out of wildlife this close to the city towers. A real coup for me would be to get an eagle in front of them.
