Snorkeling
The best free entertainment in Hawaii
We were quite frankly spoiled by Kahalu'u Beach. The beach was
a
5 minuet walk from our resort and had both great snorkeling and Sea
Turtles.
Our first day there we noticed the turtles. They eat the algae
that
grows on the rocks and they eat while people walk by, oblivous to their
presence.
Turtles will occasionly pull themselves onto the rocks and sun
themselves.
And of course there are the fish! We did most of the
snorkeling at
Kahalu'u Beach where the fish are quite tame, but the ground and corals
have
been damaged. We also visited the beach at the place of refuge
and
while the fish aren't as tame, the site is in much better condition.
You see many of the fish you would expect to see in tropical fish
tank.
The place of refuge had one more bonus - turles swimming with deeper
water
where I could hang out without fear of getting washed onto the
rocks.
Turtles aren't particularly nimble and they get washed around by the
small
waves washing over the shore. They shells protect them from the
inevitable
scapes, but I have no such advantage.
While snorkeling at Hapuna Beach, I got a drop of water on my
f100.
Nikon won't service it because it's been salt water damaged so the
camera
is effecivly a write off. Time to see how the insurance works.
