Whale Watching Tour
We spend the morning on Dan McSweeney
There are two thinkgs I regret from my Kauai trip - our diving trip
was
canceled by high surf, and I didn't take an ultralight ride around the
napali
coast. The Big Island and Maui are known for the Humpback Whale
migrations
and I was going to miss it. After some "comparison shopping" in
the
travel brochures, I decided on
Dan McSweeney's whale
watching
tour.
I wasn't particularly impressed when I got there. The clientele
was
mostly senior (as are most tourists this time of the year) and the boat
was
fully booked - limited places to take photos from. There seemed
to
be a cult like respect for the captain.
After perhaps half an hour of travel and we spotted a whale a few km
off
shore. We came in close and followed the whales around for more
than
an hour.
We did see one breach - an amazing jump. My camera was
only
manually focusing and with 50 speed film shutter time was a little slow
for
200 mm. Anyways, I need to go see the whales again.
The
ship was on a
time table - we had to be back at 11:30. So after the prescribed
period
of time, we turned ship and returned back to the harbour.
On the way back we passed a few
other boats. The sail boat looks like a great way to get around
(given
you are rich) and the Body Glove boat looked like a mad house, a
reminder
of a day off cruise we took in Mexico.
I'm glad I went - Seeing whales in Hawaii was a definite high
point.
It's not like national geographic - it's not even as good as BC
whales.
But it is cool.
