Pacific Tree Frog
I basically got as close as my lens would allow (corner to corner is 35mm) and then locked off the tripod. I belive this is about 1/20 of a second at f5.6 - it would have taken f11 to do anything with depth of field, but I suspect the frog breathing would have blurred the image.

Pacific Tree Frog In Hose
I just about stacked the hose on top of this little guy - but he sure is cute.

Great Blue Heron
These were pretty good hunters - they were pulling fish out with every strike and I didn't even see fish.
Species: Ardea herodias (Great Blue Heron)

Black Oystercatcher
These birds really stood out - it was the only time the whole weekend I saw them.

Mule Dear
Those big ears could hear me from at least as far as I could see them. They aren't as tame as the deer on Pender Island (you can almost pet those).

Red Sea Cucumber
Red Sea Cucumber, Cucumaria miniata to it's friends. These things are quite mobile - the bright red arms filter out food bits and then pull them inside to be consumed.
Species: Cucumaria miniata (Red Sea Cucumber)

Ochre Stars
These stars were the most common on the beach. I believe Piaster ochraceus is the most robust star when it comes to being left high and dry on the beach - they are always the first to be seen.
Species: Pisaster ochraceus (Ochre Star)

Mottled Star
Mottled Star, sometimes called Troschel's Sea Star or Evasterias troschelii to it's friends. This particular one was hiding on the underside of a Lewis's Moonsnail egg collar - sand, eggs and mucus. This star is also a shellfish eater - the white spots on the arm tips are apparently a primitive eye.
Species: Evasterias troschelii (mottled star)

California Tent Caterpillar
They form these tents where they can retreat to in bad weather. The caterpillars are quite fuzzy so you can stroke the tent almost like a furry animal.

Single California Tent Caterpillar
These things were dropping out of the sky and landing everywhere. I belive they were trying to find a new tree to munch on but this tree (house) had a distinct lack of leaves. (Malacosoma californicum)

Leather Star
Leather Star or Dermasterias imbricata to it's friends. Apparently it eats sea anemone's and sea cucumbers (unlike the Ochre Sea Star that his here to feed on shell fish)
