Species: Vanessa cardui (painted lady)

Russet Percher
This was probably the easiest species to photograph - long perching times and quite striking colours compared to the background.
Species: Neurothemis fulvia (Fulvous Forest Skimmer, Russet Percher)

Red Helen
I was happy to see a new to me kind of large butterfly. The day was a bit cooler than last year so not as many insects were out.
Species: Papilio helenus (Red Helen)

Worn Peacock Pansy
This was flying around a small stream next to the pizza place we had lunch.

Cabbage Whites Mating On Seed Head
Not moths - their antenna aren't feathery. This is a male and female mating. Cabbage White's are an invasive (and very plentiful) species.

Anise Swallowtail On Walkway
There were two of these Swallowtail and the painted lady at the top of the mountain and they were strongly interacting.
Species: Papilio zelicaon (Anise Swallowtail)

Painted Lady On Rock
This butterfly very rarely stopped moving.
Species: Vanessa cardui (painted lady)

Red Admiral On Sidewalk
This is a particularly hard life example - I've seen others around the office in much better shape.

Banded Alder Borer On Log
I was really surprised to see this bug - I have never seen anything like it in Canada before. I've seen Macro/bug blogs online, mostly in tropical countries and I thought they have all the interesting insects. We aren't so bad.

Blue Dasher On Rolled Up Pond Lilly
Most dragonflies are territorial - these ones seemed to really enjoy fighting
Species: Pachydiplax longipennis (Blue Dasher)

Dragonfly With Nymph Skin
This isn't the dragonfly that just crawled out of the pond - the dragonflies liked this perch and regularly pushed each other off of it. I'm not even sure that is the skin of a dasher - there are other species of dragonflies in this pond.
Species: Pachydiplax longipennis (Blue Dasher)

Claira Found Caterpillar
Claira found a caterpillar walking across the trail. She didn't want to pick it up in her hand, but she was okay with using a stick.
Species: Pyrrharctia isabella (banded woollybear)

Caterpillar On Blueberry
Identifying a butterfly is easy enough - try it before it has wings. I don't (yet) have a good caterpillar book.

I am amazed at what you can find on the internet. I asked Jeremy Tatum, the person behind Butterflies and Moths of Southern Vancouver Island, and he came up with the species. Thanks Jeremy!

California Tent Caterpillar
They form these tents where they can retreat to in bad weather. The caterpillars are quite fuzzy so you can stroke the tent almost like a furry animal.

Single California Tent Caterpillar
These things were dropping out of the sky and landing everywhere. I belive they were trying to find a new tree to munch on but this tree (house) had a distinct lack of leaves. (Malacosoma californicum)
